In a nail-biting encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria clinched a crucial victory against Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Friday. The match, which kept fans on the edge of their seats, was decided by a late goal from substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The Super Eagles, despite dominating possession for much of the game, found themselves frustrated by Libya’s resolute defense and the impressive performance of goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi. As the clock ticked down, tension mounted in the stadium, with both teams aware of the match’s significance for their AFCON qualifying campaigns.

However, the deadlock was finally broken when Dele-Bashiru, introduced late in the second half, found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into raptures. This goal not only secured three vital points for Nigeria but also maintained their position at the top of Group D.

With this win, Nigeria now boasts an impressive tally of seven points from their first three matches. Their position was further solidified by Benin’s commanding 3-0 victory over Rwanda in another Group D fixture.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to face Libya again in a reverse fixture in Benghazi on Tuesday. A win in this away encounter would put Nigeria in a commanding position to secure their spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament, set to be hosted by Morocco.

As the qualifiers progress, all eyes will be on Nigeria’s national team, eager to see if they can maintain their momentum and cement their place among Africa’s footballing elite at the upcoming continental showpiece.
