Under the new structure, teams will compete in the regular season, after which two teams from each group will qualify for the highly anticipated Super 8. The Super 8 will determine the overall champion of the league, and the eventual winner will secure promotion to the Lagos State League.

Chairman Addresses Previous Challenges

During his address, the Chairman of the IDFA, Alhaji Sonibare, reflected on some of the challenges experienced during the 2025 league season. He particularly emphasized issues related to poorly prepared match venues, noting that some pitches were not properly marked and did not meet basic standards.

He stated firmly that such lapses will not be tolerated in the 2026 season. In line with this, he announced the disqualification of some venues, including the Gberigbe Primary School pitch, due to inadequate pitch length and other structural concerns. He assured stakeholders that only compliant and standard facilities will be approved moving forward.

The Chairman also promised that the Super 8 will be hosted on a standard, lush green pitch that reflects the growing profile and ambition of the competition.

Prize Money Introduced for the First Time

In what is seen as a major boost to grassroots football in Ikorodu, the Chairman revealed the planned introduction of prize money for the winner of the 2026 Ikorodu Divisional Football League. He noted that discussions are ongoing with various sponsors to ensure the league is fully supported financially and that the eventual champions receive an attractive cash reward.

This development is expected to further motivate teams and raise the level of competition across the division.

Emphasis on Professionalism and Coaching Standards

Coach Pepe, a respected member of the IDFA, spoke passionately on the issue of indecent dressing among coaches. He stressed that coaches must present themselves professionally at all times, regardless of the grassroots nature of the competition.

According to him, dressing appropriately is a reflection of discipline, self-respect, and the value placed on the game. He encouraged all coaches to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and also urged them to affiliate with recognized coaching bodies to enhance their credibility and development.

Referees Association Issues Warning on Match Fixing

A representative of the Referees’ Association in Ikorodu also addressed participants at the ceremony, issuing a strong warning against match fixing and other unethical practices. He educated coaches on how to identify suspicious behaviors and emphasized the need to maintain the integrity of the game.

He further cautioned team captains who sometimes feel “above the law” and disrespect match officials, reminding all teams that discipline and respect remain fundamental principles of football.

A Bright Future for Grassroots Football in Ikorodu

With improved venue standards, the introduction of prize money, increased sponsorship efforts, and renewed emphasis on discipline and professionalism, the 2026 Ikorodu Divisional Football League is set to be one of the most competitive and exciting editions yet.

The IDFA’s commitment to raising standards signals a promising future for young talents, clubs, and football development across Ikorodu and beyond.
